Overview

About Frozen Shoulder

Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) is a gradual stiffening and thickening of the tissue around the shoulder joint, leading to pain and a shrinking range of motion.

It typically develops in stages over months, and while it can resolve on its own, this often takes a long time without support.

Common symptoms

  • Deep, aching pain in the shoulder, worse at night
  • Progressive stiffness and loss of movement
  • Difficulty reaching overhead, behind the back, or across the body
  • Pain that may radiate down the upper arm
  • Muscle wasting in later, prolonged stages

Possible causes

  • Prolonged immobility, such as after an injury or surgery
  • Diabetes and certain thyroid conditions
  • Age, most common between 40 and 60
  • Repetitive overhead activity or occupational strain
  • Sometimes no clear trigger at all
