Overview

About Neck Pain

Neck pain is often linked to how we sit, sleep and use screens. It can range from mild stiffness to sharp pain that limits how far you can turn your head.

Many cases relate to the joints and muscles of the cervical spine rather than the nerves themselves, though nerve involvement is always assessed.

Common symptoms

  • Stiffness when turning the head side to side
  • Aching that spreads into the shoulders or upper back
  • Headaches starting at the base of the skull
  • Pain that worsens after long periods at a screen
  • Reduced range of motion in the neck

Possible causes

  • Prolonged forward-head posture (‘tech neck’)
  • Sleeping in an awkward position or on an unsupportive pillow
  • Whiplash-type injury
  • Stress-related muscle tension
  • Degenerative changes in the cervical spine
