About Sciatica
Sciatica describes pain that travels along the sciatic nerve, from the lower back, through the buttock, and down one leg. It's a symptom of nerve irritation rather than a diagnosis in itself.
Identifying what's compressing or irritating the nerve, commonly a disc or a tight muscle, guides how it's treated.
Common symptoms
- Shooting pain from the buttock down the back of the leg
- Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot
- Pain that worsens with sitting or coughing
- Weakness in the leg or foot
- Symptoms usually affecting one side only
Possible causes
- Herniated or bulging disc pressing on the nerve root
- Piriformis muscle tightness irritating the nerve
- Spinal stenosis narrowing the space around the nerve
- Prolonged sitting or a sedentary lifestyle
- Pregnancy-related nerve compression
When to seek urgent medical care
- Sudden loss of bladder or bowel control
- Numbness in the saddle area (inner thighs/groin)
- Progressive weakness in both legs
This page is general information, not a diagnosis. If any of the above apply to you, seek medical attention promptly.
