About Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain is one of the most common reasons people see a chiropractor. It can appear suddenly after lifting or twisting, or build gradually from long periods of sitting and poor posture.

For most people, lower back pain is mechanical — related to how the joints, discs and muscles of the lumbar spine are moving and working together, rather than a sign of anything more serious.

Common symptoms

  • Dull ache or stiffness across the lower back
  • Sharp pain when bending, lifting or standing up
  • Pain that eases with rest and worsens with prolonged sitting
  • Muscle tightness or spasm in the lower back
  • Reduced range of motion in the lower spine

Possible causes

  • Poor lifting technique or sudden twisting movements
  • Prolonged sitting or desk-based work
  • Weak core or back-supporting muscles
  • Degenerative changes in the spinal joints or discs
  • Pregnancy-related postural changes
