About Scoliosis
Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine, often forming an ‘S’ or ‘C’ shape. It can appear in childhood and adolescence, or develop later in life due to degenerative changes.
Severity varies widely, many cases are mild and simply monitored, while more pronounced curves may need a broader care team.
Common symptoms
- Uneven shoulders or shoulder blades
- One hip appearing higher than the other
- A visible curve or rotation of the spine
- Back pain or fatigue with prolonged standing
- Clothes hanging unevenly
Possible causes
- Idiopathic (no identifiable cause), most common in adolescents
- Congenital spinal differences present from birth
- Neuromuscular conditions affecting spinal support
- Degenerative changes in the adult spine
- Family history of scoliosis
