About Knee Pain

Knee pain is one of the most common joint complaints, ranging from a dull ache after activity to sharp pain that limits walking or climbing stairs. It can affect people of any age, from active sports players to those with age-related wear and tear.

Many cases of knee pain relate to how the knee, hip, and ankle work together, rather than damage within the joint itself — which is why a full assessment often looks beyond the knee alone.

Common symptoms

  • Pain with walking, squatting, or climbing stairs
  • Swelling around the kneecap
  • A grinding or clicking sensation during movement
  • Stiffness after sitting for long periods
  • A feeling of the knee giving way or being unstable

Possible causes

  • Overuse from running or repetitive impact
  • Poor alignment of the hip, knee, or foot
  • Muscle weakness or imbalance around the knee
  • Degenerative changes such as osteoarthritis
  • A previous injury that didn't fully rehabilitate
