Overview

About Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis causes pain along the bottom of the foot, usually centred at the heel. It's one of the most common causes of heel pain, often linked to how the foot absorbs impact during standing and walking.

The hallmark symptom is sharp pain with the first steps after rest, such as getting out of bed, which typically eases as the foot warms up but can return after long periods of standing.

Common symptoms

  • Sharp heel pain with the first steps in the morning
  • Pain that eases with activity but returns after rest
  • Tenderness along the bottom of the heel
  • Pain after long periods of standing or walking
  • Mild swelling at the heel

Possible causes

  • Tightness in the calf muscles or Achilles tendon
  • Prolonged standing on hard surfaces
  • Flat feet or high arches affecting foot mechanics
  • Unsupportive footwear
  • Sudden increases in walking or running distance
