Overview

About Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) causes pain and tenderness on the outside of the elbow, where the forearm tendons attach to the bone. Despite the name, it's just as common in people who don't play tennis.

It's usually caused by repetitive gripping or wrist movements, and tends to develop gradually rather than from a single injury.

Common symptoms

  • Pain on the outer elbow that worsens with gripping
  • Weak grip strength
  • Pain when lifting, shaking hands, or turning a doorknob
  • Tenderness when pressing the outer elbow
  • Stiffness in the forearm

Possible causes

  • Repetitive gripping or wrist extension
  • Racquet sports or golf
  • Manual work involving tools
  • Poor technique during repetitive tasks
  • Age, most common between 30 and 50
